"Carosello Napoletano" ("Neapolitan Carousel")
(1954, 129 min., color, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Ettore Giannini
Starring: Paolo Stoppa, Clelia Matania, and Sophia Loren
This is the film adaptation of an operetta which was first performed in Florence in 1950 and found great success in subsequently tours including cities in other countries. Giannini, the director, also directed the stage version. The story unfolds in the form of a tragicomic musical omnibus. The family of an itinerant hurdy-gurdy man relate episodes from the turbulent history of Naples over the preceding centuries. The film won the International Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. It features an appearance by a young Sophia Loren.
Screening Schedule:
Friday, June 7, 13:00 - 15:09
Saturday, June 8, 18:00 - 20:09
"La Notte Brava" ("The Big Night")
(1959, 93 min., black & white, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Mauro Bolognini
Starring: Jean-Claude Brialy, Elsa Martinelli, and Antonella Lualdi
This movie is based on a short story by Pier Paolo Pasolini about the wild escapades of poor youth and their desperate lives on the outskirts of Rome. Pasolini wrote the script himself, and it marked the first film collaboration between him and Bolognini as director. The saga of the fleeting adventures on a day in the lives of a gang of mean-spirited thieves uttering defiant lines is played out to the accompaniment of stylish lounge music composed by Piero Piccioni. The actresses including Rosanna Schiaffino, Martinelli, and Mylene Demougeot all beguile viewers with a striking beauty out of keeping with their roles as prostitutes and maids in this touching, dream-like film.
Screening Schedule:
Friday, June 7, 15:15 - 16:48
Saturday, June 8, 20:15 - 21:48
●Program B (Friday 7 June 18:00- /Sunday 9 June 10:00- )
"La Fatiche di Ercole" ("Hercules")
(1958, 103 min., color, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Pietro Francisci
Starring: Steve Reeves, Sylva Koscina, and Gianna Maria Canale
Shot in Eastman color for a wide screen, this historical adventure is based on the Greek myth of Hercules and the quest for the golden fleece. While carrying on the uniquely Italian tradition of historical movies, it incorporates much material of a purely entertaining nature. This helped to make it a smash at the box office and spawned a series of sequels. With its success, Reeves, a body builder turned actor who played the leading role, instantly became an international star of the screen.
Screening Schedule:
Friday, June 7, 18:00 - 19:43
Sunday, June 9, 10:00 - 11:43
"Ercole e la Regina di Lidia" ("Hercules and the Queen of Lydia" aka "Hercules Unchained")
(1959, 100 min., color, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Pietro Franscisci
Starring: Steve Reeves, Sylva Koscina, and Sylvia Lopez
This was the second in the series of movies that followed the highly popular "Hercules." As in the first, Reeves portrays the muscle-bound hero. The story intermingles episodes from tragedies written by Sophocles and Aeschylus with Greek myths. Its rich blend of action, titillation, and fantasy kept viewers enthralled throughout. Mario Bava, a horror movie master, handled the cinematography, as he did in Hercules.
Screening Schedule:
Friday, June 7, 19:50 - 21:30
Sunday, June 9, 11:50 - 13:30
●Program C (Saturday 8 June 10:00- /Sunday 9 June 14:00- )
"Nata di Marzo" ("March's Child")
(1958, 111 min., black & white, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Antonio Pietrangeli
Starring: Jacqueline Sassard and Gabriele Ferzetti
This is the fourth full-length film by Pietrangeli, a highly talented director who created a stream of quality movies from the '50s into the 60's. Francesca, a capricious and willful 17-year-old, impulsively ends up marrying Sandro, an architect she met in town who is 20 years her senior. With her unbridled personality, she trifles with her husband, but eventually begins to realize the difficulties of married life in this drama with a wry message in a comic veil. The title alludes to the saying "Marzo è pazzo" ("March is crazy"), which refers to the unpredictable weather during that month.
Screening Schedule:
Saturday, June 8, 10:00 - 11:51
Sunday, June 9, 14:00 - 15:51
"Divorzio all' Italiana" ("Divorce Italian Style")
(1961, 105 min., black and white, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Pietro Germi
Starring: Marcello Mastroianni, Daniela Rocca, Stefania Sandrelli
This satirical comedy focuses on a man who plots to kill his nagging wife while taking advantage of the lenient treatment accorded to crimes of passion under "extenuating circumstances" in Italian law, which forbade divorce. The script co-authored by three people including Germi (based on a novel by Giovanni Arpino) took the Oscar for Best Writing, Story, and Screenplay. The movie itself was given high ratings internationally and won the Best Comedy Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Mastroianni delivers an outstanding comedic performance.
Screening Schedule:
Saturday, June 8, 12:00 - 13:45
Sunday, June 9, 16:00 - 17:45
●Program D (Saturday 8 June 14:00- /Sunday 9 June 18:00- )
"Riso Amaro" ("Bitter Rice")
(1949, 107 min., black and white, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Giuseppe de Santis
Starring: Vittorio Gassman, Ral Vallone, and Silvana Mangano
The movie tells the tale of a tragedy that results after a fugitive couple who are wanted for thievery take refuge with young female workers forced to live in prison-like housing while doing farm work for low pay for exploitative bosses. Discovered by de Santis, Mangano was called Italy's Rita Hayworth and is absolutely bursting with allure in her role. This exquisite film was the first Italian neorealismo movie to score a commercial success in Italy itself.
Screening Schedule:
Saturday, June 8, 14:00 - 15:47
Sunday, June 9, 18:00 - 19:47
"Metello" ("Metello")
(1970, 111 min., color, digitally remastered edition, BD)
Director: Mauro Bolognini
Starring: Massimo Ranieri, Ottavia Piccolo, and Tina Aumont
Set in the beautiful atmosphere of Florence at the end of the 19th century, the film creates a world that at times displays a meticulous pictorial beauty reminiscent of Vermeer paintings and is infused with a deep nostalgia and rich romanticism. The narrative flows with a smoothness reflecting the fluid and elegant strains of the score by Ennio Morricone, and the actors each deliver graceful performances in this classic, which serves up all the joys of cinema for audiences to feast upon. They cannot help but be touched by the young couple determined to survive and improve their lot in an age rocked by class struggle. Of all of the films directed by the maestro Bolognini, "Metello" won the most plaudits from critics.
Screening Schedule:
Saturday, June 8, 15:55 - 17:46
Sunday, June 9, 19:55 - 21:46
