Program

To commemorate the centenary of the birth of Pier Paolo Pasolini in 2022, one of the most original filmmakers not only in Italian cinema but also in the world , six of his best-known films will be screened.

Although he is often seen as an unorthodox filmmaker due to his scandalous themes and mysterious death, when viewed again today, one cannot help but be surprised by the high quality of his content and the novelty of his expression.

We will feature a selection of six films that stand out for those eccentric style, including Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, arguably the most controversial film in cinema history; Il Vangelo secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to St. Matthew), which faithfully depicts the life of Christ in the original book; Edipo Re (Oedipus Rex) and Media, which boldly interpret Greek tragedy as their subject matter. The film festival is also held at the same time as the festival.

This is the first time the museum has screened a full-length film since 1999 under the title 'Pasolini Festival: The Poetry and the Image'. Enjoy these masterpieces, which have not faded away even today.

Program A (Fri 26 May, 13:00 - / Sat 27 May, 15:00 -)

(1964 / 137 min / Italy / B&W / 35mm)
Director/Screenplay: Pier Paolo Pasolini

Pasolini, an atheist, faithfully adapts the Gospel of Matthew. The film faithfully depicts the birth of Christ, the Son of God, the persecution by the priests, the betrayal by Judas, the crucifixion on the hill of Golgotha and the resurrection, all in accordance with the original text. The realistic and powerful sermon scenes, beautiful black-and-white cinematography and the appeal of the lay cast, including Mary, played by Pasolini's mother, have earned the film a high reputation not only in the film industry but also among church officials.
The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival.

(1967 / 104 min / Italy / Colour / 35 mm)
Director/Screenplay: Pier Paolo Pasolini Original Story: Sophocles, King Oedipus
Cast: Silvana Mangano, Franco Chitti, Alida Valli

Film adaptation of the Greek tragedy 'Oedipus the King'. A baby abandoned by his parents is picked up by the state of Corinth and brought up as the king's son. As an adult, Oedipus hears of Apollo's trust that he 'kills his father and communes with his mother' and leaves the country. On his journey, he gets into a dispute with the king of Thebes, Laius and his party, and kills Laius. Oedipus arrives in Thebes and takes Queen Iocaste as his wife and becomes king after saving his country from the evil Sphinx, but he soon discovers the truth... Pasolini created a mythical ancient world by depicting it faithfully to his own sense of aesthetics, without historical research.

Theorema means theorem. A young stranger takes up residence in the home of a family of factory owners in Milan, where all four family members and servants are attracted to him and have sexual relations with him. When the young man leaves one day, the family falls apart...
A husband wanders naked in the wilderness, a wife scavenges for young men on the streets, a daughter stiffens, a son immerses himself in talentless painting, and a servant performs miracles. The film questions the roots of human existence unmasked. Laura Betti, who played the servant, won the Best Actress Award at the Venice International Film Festival. The bewitching charm of Silvana Mangano, who played the wife in this film and Iocaste in Apollo's Hell, draws you in.

Iason, prince of Iolkos, raised by the half-horse and half-wise centaur, wins the princess Medea and a golden fleece in Colchis and then moves to Corinth and has two sons. Iason is favoured by the king and becomes betrothed to the princess Glauke. Betrayed, Media plans a terrible revenge...
A masterpiece with beautiful costumes, fantastic landscapes including Cappadocia and folk music from all over the world, including the use of Japanese nagauta and chanting.

(2) Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (ソドムの市)

Cast: Paolo Bonacelli, Giorgio Cataldi, Aldo Valletti

At the end of the Second World War, the four most powerful men in the Nazi regime in the northern Italian town of Salo gather together to hunt beautiful boys and girls from all over the town and unleash an unimaginable infernal frenzy.
In addition to its shocking depiction of the extremes of human ugliness, the film caused a sensation when Pasolini was murdered by someone shortly after filming. It is no exaggeration to say that this is Pasolini's last film and the most problematic film in the history of cinema. Can we continue to see this film squarely?
