Overview
What do home, household family mean to us living in the time of wevering values?
"HOME" was commissioned to Netherlands-based worldly successful pianist as well as artist and diretor, Tomoko Mukaiyama, and premiered as part of Saitama Triennnale 2016, presenting completely sold-out 22 performances of 12 days and installation over 60 days at Japanese traditional old house, in Iwatsuki city, Saitama prefecture. After such succucessful presentation, now "HOME" will be installed at one of old houses in Akaoka town of Kochi prefecture this spring. The piece will unfold questions around house, household and family in the course of provoking performance "HOME".
The venue for this performance is the 150-year-old Japanese traditional house of the first mayor of the village of Akaoka. It is a townhouse that has changed with the history of the town into a shoe store and a tobacco shop. The atomosphere and time that drift here and there, inside and outside the house, are like evoking memories of the past into reality and fantasy, leaving behind a hint of the past. The audience is invited to the living room where the piece takes place, and as if looking into the life of a woman, placing themselves in the boundary between the inside and outside of the house and people, front and back, and the other world, and confronting the woman's half-life at the same time.
Mukaiyama's research focused on the rich spirituality of Mt. Osore and her hometown of Kumano, where death is ordinaries of everyday life and where he is based in Europe, where refugees face the challenge of a "second home". Is the place we call home a safe space, or a dangerous place with a disturbing atmosphere...? HOME is changing with the times. The past, present and future of "HOME" will be hinted at by the personal and universal thoughts carried by the audience.
The dance of Eima Yuasa, who throws herself on the floor of only 8 tatami mats with great verve, is a masterpiece. Another highlight of this work is the collaboration with Endo Yutaka, who uses advanced technology to condense Mukaiyama's music, video, photography and other elements into a room. Come experience "HOME" in front row presented by three artists who are active at the forefront of the music industry in Japan and abroad.
