内容

世界をフィールドに活躍する写真家、石川直樹（1977-）の個展を開催します。
石川は14歳の時に生家のある東京からひとり電車を乗り継ぎ、単身で高知に訪れました。この旅が冒険の原点となり、17歳でインドに一人旅、22歳で北極点から南極点までを人力で踏破、23歳では七大陸最高峰の登頂に成功しました。その後も国内・世界各地を旅し、人類学や民俗学などの観点を取り入れた独自のスタイルで写真を撮り続けています。
本展では、北極や南極、世界第二位の高峰K2といった極地の風景を写した各シリーズ、太古の壁画を訪ね歩いて撮影したシリーズ《NEW DIMENSION》、人類の移動の航跡をたどって南太平洋の島々を旅した《CORONA》など、初期から現在に至るまでの活動の軌跡を、石川による文章や実際の旅で用いた道具類を交えて総合的に紹介します。
国境という人工的な区分に捕らわれず、自らの足で訪ね、自らの目で見たという確かな実感に裏打ちされた石川の写真は、個人の冒険の記録というだけでなく、世界各地の文化が有機的につながっている様をもとらえたものです。彼が今なお縦横に続ける旅は文化人類学的なフィールドワークであると同時に、自身の身体そのもので世界の広がりを探究する果てしない試みでもあります。本展は、石川のまなざしを反映した写真の数々を通して、新たな視点から「この星」を見つめるきっかけとなるでしょう。

石川直樹 プロフィール

1977年東京生まれ。写真家。東京芸術大学大学院美術研究科博士後期課程修了。人類学、民俗学などの領域に関心を持ち、辺境から都市まであらゆる場所を旅しながら、作品を発表し続けている。『NEW DIMENSION』(赤々舎)、『POLAR』(リトルモア)により、日本写真協会新人賞、講談社出版文化賞、『CORONA』(青土社)により土門拳賞を受賞。著書に、開高健ノンフィクション賞を受賞した『最後の冒険家』(集英社)ほか多数。最近では、ヒマラヤの8000m峰に焦点をあてた写真集シリーズ『Lhotse』『Qomolangma』『Manaslu』『Makalu』『K2』(SLANT)を5冊連続刊行。最新刊に『知床半島』（北海道新聞社）、『Svalbard』（スーパーラボ）がある。

Museum of Art, Kochi is hosting an exhibition by photographer Naoki Ishikawa (1977-), who uses the world as his field.

When Ishikawa was 14 years old, he boarded a connecting train from his hometown of Tokyo and came by himself to visit Kochi. That trip became the starting point for his adventures; he travelled alone to India aged 17, went from the North to the South Pole by foot at 22, and at 23, climbed to the tops of the "Seven Summits". After that he travelled across Japan and around the world taking photographs using his unique style that draws from the perspectives of anthropology and folkloristics.

Our exhibition will provide a comprehensive introduction into his work, from his early pieces through to the present, showcasing his photography itself, supplemented with his writings and some of the actual tools he used on his travels. This will feature series depicting the very extremes of our planet, including the North and the South Pole, and K2 (Mount. Godwin-Austen) the second highest mountain in the world, as well as the series "NEW DIMENSION", which captures ancient frescos that he visited on his travels, and "CORONA", where he followed the traces of human migrations across the islands of the South Pacific.

Ishikawa's photographs reinforce the feeling of experiencing surroundings with one's own senses and not being restrained by the man-made constructs of national borders. They are not simply a record of his personal adventures, but capture how different cultures around the world are organically connected. He still continues his travels to all corners of the earth, which not only serve as cultural anthropological fieldwork but also attempt to realise his quest to physically explore the breadth of the world himself. This exhibition is a chance to look intently at the planet from a new perspective, through the lense of Ishikawa's world view.

Profile of Naoki Ishikawa

A photographer born in 1977 in Tokyo, he completed a Ph.D at Tokyo University of the Arts. He was interested in the areas of anthropology and folkloristics, and continued to display his works while travelling to a range of places, from remote regions to urban cities. He was awarded The Newcomer's Award from the Photographic Society of Japan and The Kodansha Publication Culture Award for his photography books"New Dimension" (Akaaka) and "POLAR" (Little More), and received The Domon Ken Award for "CORONA" (Seidisha). He was presented with the Kaiko Takeshi [Non-Fiction] Award for his publication "Saigo no Boken-ka" (the last adventurer) (SHUEISHA) amongst others. Recently, he has published a series of 5 books, "Lhotse", "Qomolanma", "Manaslu", "Makalu", and "K2" (SLANT) featuring photographs that focus on the 8000m ridges of the Himalayas. His most recent publication are "Shiretoko Peninsula" (The Hokkaido Shimbun Press), and "Svalbard" (SUPER LABO).

To acclimatize for an expedition to K2 this summer, Ishikawa will be going to the base of Mt. Kanchenjunga across April and May this year. At the debrief he will talk about his journey to the base camp of the third-highest mountain in the world.
