Content

The Strandbeest walks across the shoreline, propelled and animated by wind. Known as beach animals in his native Dutch, these Strandbeests are a project the Netherland sculptor Theo Jansen began working on in 1990. The lifeforms born from plastic tubes and plastic bottles are capable of walking, changing direction, and sensing danger, and they continue to evolve to adapt to various environments. Based on physics principles, the Strandbeest's movements are organic as it straddles the line between artistic and scientific, opening our eyes to new possibilities.

At this first exhibition of Theo Jansen's work in Shikoku, draw nearer to the fascinating world Jansen seeks to create. See the genealogical evolution of the Strandbeests, videos, wooden models and parts of former beasts, sketches drawn by Jansen himself, and the tools he used to create the beach animals.
