内容

1928（昭和3）年、高知市生まれの岡上淑子（おかのうえ としこ）は、「幻のコラージュ作家」として、今大きな注目を集めています。

岡上は、主に1950（昭和25）年から1956（昭和31）年にかけてのわずか7年間に、進駐軍が残した洋雑誌を切り抜き、貼り合わせ、約140点の独創的なコラージュ作品を制作しました。これまで誰も見たことのない、夢のような世界を紡ぎ出した岡上作品は、幻想的でありながら現実感に裏打ちされ、優雅で繊細ながら、時に苦悩や死の気配を帯びた不穏な物語を感じさせ、鮮烈な印象を残します。

敗戦後の日本において、美術評論家・瀧口修造によって見いだされ、希有な才能を開花させた岡上でしたが、結婚を機に美術界から姿を消し、1996（平成8）年に「再発見」されるまで、長らくその存在は忘れられたままでした。しかし、2000（平成12）年に72歳で開催された個展以降、「再評価」のスピードは目覚ましいものがあります。高知県立美術館や東京国立近代美術館、東京都写真美術館、栃木県立美術館、ヒューストン美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館など国内外の美術館が作品を収蔵し、また近年刊行された作品集を通じた出あいからも新たな岡上ファンは増え続けています。

本展は、国内に所蔵されている貴重な岡上作品約110点が一堂に会する初めての回顧展です。オリジナルのコラージュ作品と写真作品に加えて、コラージュをもとに近年制作したシルクスクリーンプリントとプラチナプリントも作家の新たな試みとして併せてご紹介することで、幻の作家の真の姿に迫ります。

コラージュ [collage]：フランス語で糊付け、または貼り絵の意味。異素材を貼りあわせ、画面に造型的な効果を表す美術技法のひとつであり、キュビスム時代のピカソやシュルレアリストのエルンストらが積極的に創作に取り入れた。

1953年　タケミヤ画廊で個展開催、「抽象と幻想」展（東京国立近代美術館）にも出品

Born in 1928 in Kochi City, Okanoue Toshiko is currently receiving much attention as an "artist of surreal collages".

Between the short span of 7 years- mostly from 1950 to 1956 - Okanoue made approximately 140 original collages by cutting up foreign magazines left by the occupying forces, and pasting them together. Okanoue’s works spun a dream-like world that had not been seen until then and her works leave a striking impression; while they are surreal they are supported with a sense of reality, and alongside being both elegant and delicate, make you sense a story of turbulence that is tinged with signs of the suffering and death of that time.

After Japan was defeated in the war, Okanoue was discovered by fine art critic Takiguchi Shuzo enabling her rare talent to blossom. However, after marriage she disappeared from the world of art, and her existence remained forgotten for a long time until she was “rediscovered” in 1996. However, after holding a private exhibition in 2000 at the age of 72, the speed of her reevaluation was astonishing. Many art galleries, both in Japan and abroad collected her works, including Museum of Art, Kochi, The National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, Tokyo Photographic Arts Museum, Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Furthermore, new fans of Okanoue continue to grow due to encounters with her work through publications of her collections in recent years.

This exhibition is the first time that around 110 valuable works of hers that are held around the country have been assembled altogether in a retrospective exhibition. As a new experiment by the artist, in addition to her original collages and photographic works, the exhibition will also combine and introduce silk screen prints and platinum prints based on her collages, which have been made in recent years and draw near to the true form of the surrealist artist.

Okanoue Toshiko Profile

1928　Born in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, she later moved to Tokyo.

(Approx.) 1950　While studying in the design department at Bunka Gakuin she started making collages.

1953　Individual exhibition held at Takemiya Gallery, and her work was also included in the exhibition “Abstraction and Surrealism” (The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo).

1957　After marrying she became removed from the art world.

1967　Moved residence to Kochi City (where she currently resides)

2000　Held first individual exhibition in 44 years (Dai-ichi Life South Gallery)

2002　Held an individual exhibited in The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA, and her first collection of works were published (Nazraeli Press).

2015　“A long journey The Works of Toshiko Okanoue” was published (Kawade Shobo Shinsha)
